Supporting Guilford Courthouse

The Corps was established in the late 1990’s by Stephen Ware, who served as a ranger for the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. The idea behind the ensemble was to support the National Park Service in helping share the story of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.

The Battle of Guilford Courthouse was “the largest and most hotly contested action” in the American Revolution’s southern theater between the American forces led by Major General Nathanael Greene and the British Army led by Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. The park film below, “Another Such Victory,” summarizes the battle and overviews the events of March 15th, 1781.

From the inception, the emphasis of the Corps has been on volunteerism and musicians performing for the public. First, this includes the teaching of the historic importance of field music during the Revolutionary War as a communication tool on the battlefield.

Second, the understanding of the value of music to the soldiers on the field and in the camps as a morale booster and early American cultural expression. Today, the Corps performs at a variety of public ceremonies, dedications, parades, and strives to support the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.
